Elżbieta Bieńkowska has a master’s in oriental philology from Jagiellonian University, a post-graduate diploma from the Polish National School of Public Administration and an MBA from the Warsaw School of Economics.
Bieńkowska began her career in public administration at the Katowice City Council, where she went on to head the Department of Economy. As Director of Regional Development for the Silesia Region, she managed the local implementation of the EU’s Phare programme. In 2007, she was named Poland’s Minister for Regional Development and, in 2013, she was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Poland and Minister of Infrastructure and Development.
She has served as European Commissioner for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs since 2014.
